About
Norwalk Hospital, founded in 1892, is a non-profit community teaching hospital and Level II Trauma Center serving a population of nearly 250,000 residents in southwestern Connecticut. The Norwalk/Yale Physician Assistant Surgical Residency is an intensive, twelve-month program conducted jointly by the Departments of Surgery at Norwalk Hospital and Yale University School of Medicine. The program accepts nine-twelve PA residents each year. Through the combined efforts of both institutions, the curriculum offers the graduate PA a dynamic and educational experience. The comprehensive curriculum at Norwalk Hospital includes a structured series of lectures, reinforced ongoing clinical responsibilities including pre and post-operative care, and intra-operative assisting. Lectures cover core topics in the broad range of surgical specialties, clinical anatomy, and all aspects of surgical care, both operative and non-operative. Additional didactic elements include Grand Rounds, Morbidity and Mortality Conferences, Trauma Rounds, and an informal journal club. Yale provides an intensive cadaver lab for anatomic instruction and a live animal surgery lab. The Department of Surgery at Norwalk Hospital has an extremely limited number of visiting MD residents (two). This provides every opportunity for surgical patient care to the PA trainees with direct supervision from a staff PA or attending physician.
