Established in 1971, Montefiore’s Physician Assistant Residency is the oldest postgraduate PA residency program in the country, with a distinguished legacy of advancing the education and clinical development of physician assistants.
At Montefiore, residents are immersed in an exceptionally rigorous training environment designed to cultivate the three qualities that distinguish an outstanding physician assistant: knowledge, technical expertise, and, above all, sound clinical judgment.
First, residents develop a comprehensive depth of medical knowledge through exposure to a broad spectrum of complex clinical conditions. Second, they acquire advanced surgical expertise through extensive first-assisting experience alongside nearly 50 surgeons representing a diverse range of surgical specialties, across the aforementioned institutions and in a wide variety of clinical settings. Finally, and most importantly, residents develop the judgment that transforms knowledge and technical proficiency into exceptional patient care—the ability to assess each clinical situation thoughtfully, anticipate challenges, and make sound decisions with confidence and precision.
It is this combination of knowledge, surgical mastery, and clinical judgment that has defined the Montefiore PA Residency for generations and continues to distinguish its graduates among their peers.
The program begins each September with a dedicated didactic phase that provides residents with a strong foundation in surgical principles and clinical practice. This phase combines comprehensive lectures on relevant surgical topics with hands-on laboratory sessions and skills-based workshops, including suturing, trauma management, laparoscopic techniques, and radiologic interpretation.
Beginning in November, residents enter a rigorous 12-month clinical training experience encompassing a broad range of surgical specialties and practice settings. Core rotations include Acute Care Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), Trauma, the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Ambulatory Surgery, and Surgical Consultation.
Residents also have the opportunity to pursue elective rotations in additional surgical and procedural disciplines, including Cardiothoracic Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, and Interventional Radiology, among others. This breadth of clinical exposure allows residents to develop both depth and versatility while gaining experience caring for a diverse and complex surgical patient population.
